Stakeholder Insight: Major Depressive Disorder – Gaining traction among physicians is crucial in an SSRI-dominated market
October 25, 2011 by admin
Introduction
Prescribing trends reveal that the MDD market is receptive to alternative modes of actions at later lines of therapy, while traditional classes dominate earlier lines. Favorable physician perception is crucial in order to maximize uptake into the market, as demonstrated by recent antipsychotic labeling expansions. The clear demonstration of efficacy and tolerability is therefore paramount.
Features and benefits
* Forecasts of major depressive disorder patient population numbers in the seven major markets based on a comprehensive epidemiological review.
* Estimated presentation and diagnosis rates, care pathway, and segmentation of depression cases by disease severity, age, and gender.
* In-depth analysis of treatment patterns and regimens prescribed for MDD by antidepressant class and line of therapy.
* Analysis of 10 key brands, including SSRIs, SNRIs, antipsychotics, and novel antidepressants, based upon physician perception and therapeutic role.
* Detailed review of patient outcomes, including progression through lines of therapy, treatment-resistant depression, relapse, and compliance.
Highlights
Although Datamonitors survey suggests treatment decisions are usually made by psychiatrists, interviewed KOLs suggest that PCPs are actively managing the majority of MDD patients. Understanding the physician type that is most involved with depressed patients is important in tailoring a strong marketing message to a target audience.SSRI usage is by far the highest at first line and decreases at later lines of therapy, in direct contrast all other classes of drugs for MDD. Lexapro is widely perceived by psychiatrists to be the gold standard, possessing the best overall efficacy and tolerability. These were rated as the two most important clinical attributes by psychiatrists.Abilify, being the first antipsychotic to be granted FDA approval for MDD, is highly thought of by US psychiatrists, while EU psychiatrists tend to favor Seroquel, which became the first EC-approved antipsychotic. Physician perception is swayed by regulatory approval, which allows specific marketing and removes barriers to off-label prescription.

Depression Test

As depression has the ability to affect our lives badly, there should be early warning symptoms that can indicate whether we do have some form of depression disorder. We need to be able to differentiate between normal depression which passes in a few days to depression disorders which last for sometimes months or years on end. There are a number of depression test sites that you can investigate on the internet.
While these tests can indicate if you are suffering from depression, they can’t replace proper medical diagnosing. As these depression tests are conducted online, the level of information regarding your possibility of depression will be gleaned from the answers that you will be providing. Also your emotional and mental states during what might be a depression attack will not be evaluated. Therefore you must remember that any depression test can only help you, they can’t provide the necessary medical aid that you may need.
]]>
In order for the depression test to work properly you should read the question and click an answer that best indicates your feelings and emotional state for the past few days. You should have an answer for each of the questions that are asked. Any question on the test that you are unable to answer, because you are not quite sure of what to indicate, needs to be guessed at.
The questions that will be asked are aimed at your emotional state, your mental condition and your physical fitness level. An example of what sort of question that you might be asked is – I get very frightened or panicky feeling for no good reason at all. For all of the questions on the depression test there are four possible responses that you can choose from on the questionnaire. They are No, not at all; No, not much; Yes, sometimes; and Yes, definitely.
Once you have completed the depression test you will need to click the Calculate Score button that is located at the bottom of the test. When the score has been tallied, you will be informed whether you have the potential for depression or not. Should the results of the test is not acceptable to you, you can click the reset button to take the test again.
Even though your depression test may confirm if you are suffering from depression you should seek medical aid and advice as soon as possible. The reason is that a correct diagnoses needs to be made so that the right treatment, medications and therapy can be administered to you. Taking a depression test therefore is only the first step towards curing your depression once and for all.

Depression or prolonged sadness is actually quite common in the United States, around 9.5 percent of the American population actually suffers from this illness, however, not all of them get to be treated, thus, depression and its ill-effects continue to be a burden to some individuals. This illness may seem quite simple to treat but in reality, it takes more than a little cheering up to actually cure depression. Constant visits to a cognitive behavior therapist is a must as well as taking all the prescribed medicines that the doctor will ask the patient to take – none of these exactly come cheap, but the amount of suffering that a person is going through because of depression is enough reason already for others to start taking notice and face depression head on through the various depression treatments that are available today.
Depression oftentimes can easily get in the way of an individual’s daily activities and his or hers’ normal functions, one’s zest for life can quickly and easily dissipate due to depression. And in place of an individual’s sunny disposition is more or less a person who hates his or herself, having no self-confidence, trying to isolate one’s self from the world and basically just not caring about living any more. More so, a person suffering from depression isn’t the only one who’s going to suffer from this destructive illness, his or her loved ones are sure to follow suit. By seeing the individual grow through such rough patches, basically not caring about anything or anyone anymore, it’s highly likely that not only will depression one’s relationship with one’s self but with his or her loved ones too. But this shouldn’t really pose as such a problem since people who suffer from depression are actually lucky that there are all sorts of depression treatments that can be used to aid an individual through the course of having a sound mental health.

From various medications (like Zoloft antidepressant depression treatment) to all sorts of psychotherapies promising to be the best depression treatment. The patient, as well as his or her family are sure to get the best, positive results from these depression treatments.
Psychotherapy, a popular type of depression treatment actually includes short-term therapy sessions, usually from ten to twenty weeks promising to actually be able to make positive results for the depression patient. This type of depression treatment actually helps the individual by slowly making them to actually open up about their feelings, the root of their problems, more so, the root of their depression. Healthy verbal exchanges between the cognitive behavior therapist and the depression patient is great depression treatment that’ll positively affect the depression patient by helping him or her discuss and talk about whatever they’ve been keeping inside.
Various medications that are available for depression treatment are actually great for helping the depression patient to regulate his or her mood swings, to actually help him or her sleep better and as well as be more pleasant towards others.

Lobby card: The Grapes of Wrath (1939)
The Great Depression, precipitated by the stock market crash of Black Tuesday, October 29, 1929, was one of the bleakest periods in world history. Here are ten Hollywood dramatic movies which best capture that era of breadlines, catastrophic unemployment and Hoovervilles. Brother, can you spare a dime?
The Grapes of Wrath (Twentieth Century-Fox, 1940)
Based on the 1939 best-selling novel of the same name by John Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath debuted at New York City’s Rivoli Theater on January 24, 1940, attracting 12,917 patrons for its first day’s showing. The movie centers on Tom Joad (Henry Fonda) and family, who leave Dust Bowl Oklahoma to look for migrant work in California. Shot in stark black and white, The Grapes of Wrath is unarguably the granddaddy of Great Depression films, expertly capturing the plight of the desperate, dust-caked Okies as they journey west on U.S. 66 in the midst of the hardest of economic times. Made for 0,000, The Grapes of Wrath also features Jane Darwell, John Carradine, Dorris Bowden, Russell Simpson, O.Z. Whitehead, John Qualen and Eddie Quillan.
Academy Award nominations: Best Picture, Best Actor (Fonda), Best Director (John Ford, won), Best Supporting Actress (Darwell, won), Best Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Sound
Director: John Ford
Review: “Bitter, authentic, honest, it marches straight to its tragic end with a reality that suggests a superb newsreel, with a courage that merits a badge of honor for the U.S. move industry.” – Life magazine (1/22/40)
On DVD: The Grapes of Wrath (Twentieth Century-Fox, 2004)
Bound for Glory (United Artists, 1976)
David Carradine shines as Woody Guthrie (1912-1967), America’s premier folk singer who leaves his native Oklahoma in the 1930s to search for work. Guthrie rides the rails, composing his songs and discovering the triumph and tragedy of the American working class along the way. Ronny Cox, Melinda Dillon and Gail Strickland also appear, with David Carradine’s Guthrie delivering such Depression-era tunes as “Hard Travelin’,” “This Train Is Bound for Glory,” “Hobo’s Lullaby,” “Talking Dust Bowl Blues” and “This Land Is Your Land.” One of the movie’s highlights is the mammoth dust storm, which engulfs an entire town.
Academy Award nominations: Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography (won), Best Film Editing, Best Original Music Score (won), Best Costume Design
Director: Hal Ashby
Review: “Ashby and [cinematographer Haskell] Wexler recreate the Depression years so well, see them so faithfully; that the movie actually becomes a historical document. If we want to know what that decade looked like, this is the film to come to.” – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times (3/9/77)
On DVD: Bound for Glory (MGM/UA, 2000)
Emperor of the North Pole (Twentieth Century-Fox, 1973)
Lee Marvin stars as A No. 1, a rail-riding hobo in the Great Depression who shows the ropes to novice tramp Cigaret (Keith Carradine). Marvin’s A No. 1 plans to ride a train all the way into Eugene, Oregon, which is patrolled by the feared, sadistic railroad bull/conductor Shack (Ernest Borgnine). The climax comes when A No. 1 and Shack square off while en route on the big mechanical beast, battling it out with two-by-fours and an axe. Emperor of the North Pole captures two key components of Great Depression culture – the railroads and the hobos who used them as “alternate transportation.” Emperor of the North was filmed with the complete cooperation of the Oregon, Pacific and Eastern Railway, who provided the rolling stock for the picture.
Director: Robert Aldrich
Review: “Robert Aldrich’s ‘Emperor of the North Pole’ is a fine, elaborately staged action melodrama set mostly on the freight trains and in the hobo jungles of the American Northwest during the Great Depression…The suspense of the film (which is so hugely violent that its PG rating is a mystery), is unrelenting and the performances first-rate, including that of Keith Carradine, a son of John, as a loudmouth kid to whom Marvin tries to teach the rules of the road.” – Vincent Canby, The New York Times (5/25/73)
On DVD: Emperor of the North (Twentieth Century-Fox, 2006)
Promotional still: Ernest Borgnine and Lee Marvin square off in Emperor of the North (1973)
Ironweed (Columbia TriStar, 1987)
Jack Nicholson stars as Francis Phelan, an alcoholic ex-major league pitcher who returns to his native Albany, New York, around Halloween 1938. Meryl Streep plays Phelan’s girlfriend Helen Archer, a terminally ill woman who used to sing on the radio, with Carroll Baker, Diane Venora, Michael O’Keefe, Tom Waits and Fred Gwynne also in the fine cast. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by William Kennedy, Ironweed is steeped in the tough times of the era, complete with a harrowing scene in which a vigilante group tries to drive the homeless and destitute out of Albany with baseball bats.
Academy Award nominations: Best Actor (Nicholson), Best Actress (Streep)
Director: Hector Babenco
Review: “Unrelentingly bleak, Ironweed is a film without an audience and no reason for being except its own self-importance. It’s an event picture without the event. Whatever joy or redemption William Kennedy offered in his Pulitzer prize-winning novel is nowhere to be found, surprising since he wrote the screenplay.” – Variety (1986)
On DVD: Ironweed (Lions Gate, 2009)
Hard Times (Columbia, 1975)
Set in New Orleans of 1933, Hard Times stars Charles Bronson as a bare-knuckle fighter named Chaney who hooks up with Speed (James Coburn), a smooth, fast-talking promoter who arranges his street bouts. Bronson, who was nearly 54-years-old at the time of the picture’s release, ably carries the role as the tough, gritty pugilist who fights for money in the depths of the Great Depression. Jill Ireland (Bronson’s wife since 1968), Strother Martin and Maggie Blye also appear in the film, which paints a bleak, atmospheric portrait of hard times in the Big Easy.
Director: Walter Hill
Review: “’Hard Times’ is a powerful, brutal film containing a definitive Charles Bronson performance. He plays Chaney, a man of few words and no past, who rides the rails to New Orleans for the winter and tries to win some money by fist fighting. It’s in the middle of the Depression. The fights are all-out and bare-knuckle, held in warehouses and open by invitation to men with cash to wager.” – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times (10/14/75)
On DVD: Hard Times (Columbia TriStar, 1999)
Of Mice and Men (United Artists, 1939)
Based on the 1937 novel of the same name by John Steinbeck, Of Mice and Men came to movie theaters on December 30, 1939. The film stars Burgess Meredith (George Milton) and Lon Chaney Jr. (Lennie Small), two migrant workers during the Great Depression who find employment on a ranch near Soledad, California. Lennie is a man of great physical strength but of limited mental capacity, with the cynical George serving as his guardian. Things turn nasty when Lennie accidentally kills young Mae (Betty Field), the wife of the owner’s son (Bob Steele), with a lynch mob clamoring for his life.
Academy Award nominations: Best Picture, Best Original Music Score, Best Sound, Best Music Scoring
Director: Lewis Milestone
Review: “Lewis Milestone, who directed it; Eugene Solow, who adapted it, and Burgess Meredith, Lon Chaney Jr., Betty Field and the others who have performed it, have done more than well in simply realizing the drama’s established values. ‘Of Mice and Men’ need not have been better as a play than it was as a novelette; it need not be better as a picture, so long as it is just as good.” – Frank S. Nugent, The New York Times (2/17/40)
On DVD: Of Mice and Men (Image, 1998)
Paper Moon (Paramount, 1973)
Ryan O’Neal stars as Moses Pray, an aptly named con man who preys on his victims during the Great Depression. Saddled with a young girl named Addie Loggins (Tatum O’Neal), Moses traverses the back roads of America, peddling his “pre-ordered” bibles to widows and running his games on unsuspecting store owners and other easy marks. Madeline Kahn plays Trixie Delight, with John Hillerman and P.J. Johnson also in the mix. “I want my two hundred dollars!” Addie screams at Moze in one scene. “But I don’t have it,” he replies. “Then get it!” she answers. Shot in black and white, Paper Moon is loaded with the sights and sounds of the Great Depression, right down to the tinny old songs, radio programs and folksy quotes from “Frank Roosevelt,” as Addie calls FDR.
Academy Award nominations: Best Supporting Actress (Tatum O’Neal, won), Best Supporting Actress (Kahn), Best Sound, Best Screenplay
Director: Peter Bogdanovich
Review: “Bogdanovich and his screenwriter, Alvin Sargent, who adapted Joe David Brown’s novel, have set out to make a bittersweet comedy that is both in the style of thirties movies and about the thirties. They evoke the time (1936) and the place (rural Kansas and Missouri) so convincingly that their rather sweet formula story seems completely inadequate, even fraudulent.” – Vincent Canby, The New York Times (5/17/73)
On DVD: Paper Moon (Paramount, 2003)
They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? (Cimerama, 1969)
The Great Depression-era craze of marathon dancing comes alive in They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?, which premiered in New York City on December 10, 1969. Jane Fonda (Grace), Michael Sarrazin (Robert), Susannah York (Alice), Gig Young (Rocky), Red Buttons (Sailor), Bonnie Bedelia (Ruby) and Michael Conrad (Rollo) head the strong cast. The setting is a rundown dance emporium on the Pacific pier in Los Angeles, where a disparate, motley group of contestants vie for the big cash prize in a grueling marathon dance contest run by a sadistic master of ceremonies named Rocky. Well, desperate times breed desperate actions, as the competing couples prance around the dance floor like cattle. But yowza, yowza, yowza! Look at those young people dance!
Academy Award nominations: Best Actress (Fonda), Best Supporting Actor (Young, won), Best Supporting Actress (York), Best Director, Best Film Editing, Best Screenplay, Best Music Score, Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Best Costume Design
Director: Sydney Pollack
Review: “…The movie is by far the best thing that Pollack has ever directed (with the possible exception of The Scalphunters). While the cameras remain, as if they had been sentenced, within the ballroom, picking up the details of the increasing despair of the dancers, the movie becomes an epic of exhaustion and futility. The circular patterns of the dancers, the movement that leads nowhere, are the metaphors of the movie.” – Vincent Canby, The New York Times (12/11/69)
On DVD: They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? (MGM, 2004)
Bonnie and Clyde (Warner Bros./Seven Arts, 1967)
Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway play the gun happy gangsters who shoot their way to infamy during the Great Depression in this highly fictionalized movie version of the unhappy ballad of Bonnie and Clyde. Gene Hackman appears as Buck Barrow, with Michael J. Pollard (C.W. Moss), Estelle Parsons (Blanche Barrow), Denver Pyle (Texas Ranger Frank Hamer) and Dub Taylor (Ivan Moss) also along for the ride. And a bloody, violent one it is, as the Barrow gang – brandishing pistols, Thompson submachine guns and Browning automatic rifles – shoot up the already bleak Depression-era landscape like no other cinematic gangsters before them. Gene Wilder has a small, hilarious role as Eugene Grizzard, an angry little geek who pursues the heavily-armed Barrow gang who had stolen his wheels. “We rob banks,” Dunaway’s Bonnie Parker declares. And so they do.
Academy Award nominations: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Beatty), Best Actress (Dunaway), Best Supporting Actress (Parsons, won), Best Supporting Actors (Hackman, Pollard), Best Story and Screenplay, Best Costume Design, Best Cinematography (won)
Director: Arthur Penn
Review: “’Bonnie and Clyde’ is a milestone in the history of American movies, a work of truth and brilliance. It is also pitilessly cruel, filled with sympathy, nauseating, funny, heartbreaking, and astonishingly beautiful.” – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times (9/25/67)
On DVD: Bonnie and Clyde (Warner, 1999)
Promotional still: Gene Hackman and Warren Beatty as Buck and Clyde Barrow in Bonnie and Clyde (1967)
Honkytonk Man (Warner Bros., 1982)
Clint Eastwood stars as Red Stovall, a fledgling, tuberculosis-ridden country-western singer who leaves his sister’s dust-choked Oklahoma farm during the Depression and heads to Nashville for a tryout on WSM’s fabled Grand Ole Opry. Driving Red to the big dance is 14-year-old Whit (Kyle Eastwood), Red’s nephew, who sees this as his big chance to get out of the Dust Bowl and make something of his young life. “Uncle Red, don’t you think you have a problem with your drinking?” the kid asks. “Only when I can’t get it,” Red answers. A sleeper in both Depression-era themed movies and Clint Eastwood’s own filmography, Honkytonk Man also features John McIntire, Alexa Kenin, Verna Bloom, several Eastwood tunes and Marty Robbins performing the title song.
Director: Clint Eastwood
Review: “Only charm and sentimentality could have brought the requisite magic to Clint Eastwood’s ‘Honkytonk Man’; unfortunately, this well-intentioned but weak film hasn’t nearly enough of either. Set in the Depression, opening in the Dust Bowl and heading east to Nashville, the story tracks a man and a boy, played by Mr. Eastwood and his son Kyle, through various rites of passage.” – Janet Maslin, The New York Times (12/15/82)
On DVD: Honkytonk Man (Warner, 2010)

howtocopewithdepression.com When it comes to men and depression you will find that there are over three million men in the United States that suffer from depression, however you should know that only 35% of all men find themselves in a depression. When it comes to the view of the male image, you’ll find that many call them “the rock” or the “solid one”, however men can suffer from depression. Just because you have, a depression doesn’t mean that you are any less of a man because of it. Researchers estimate that at least six million men in the United States suffer from a depressive disorder every year. Research and clinical evidence reveal that while both women and men can develop the standard symptoms of depression, they often experience depression differently and may have different ways of coping with the symptoms. Men may be more willing to acknowledge fatigue, irritability, loss of interest in work or hobbies, and sleep disturbances rather than feelings of sadness, worthlessness, and excessive guilt. Some researchers question whether the standard definition of depression and the diagnostic tests based upon it adequately capture the condition as it occurs in men. Men are more likely than women to report alcohol and drug abuse or dependence in their lifetime;however, there is debate among researchers as to whether substance use is a symptom of underlying depression in men or a co occurring condition that more commonly develops in men. Nevertheless, substance use can mask …

Treating Depression Naturally While Developing Your Intelligence

The natural depression treatment provided to you by the wise unconscious mind in your nightly dreams is the most effective one. You’ll be amazed as you’ll verify the importance of the meaning of your dreams. This will be a true revelation that will completely change your life.
In the beginning of my career in 1990, I had to insist with my depressed patients that they needed treatment in the form of dream therapy. Their dreams had to be taken seriously.
I did a lot of pro bono work. I cured their depression without payment, like a sister. I would go to their houses, meet the other members of their families, and help them in their daily tasks. I had the chance to understand the origin of many of their psychological problems beyond depression this way.
I would instantly translate all their dreams, and then explain how to apply this knowledge to their lives, helping them follow the unconscious guidance.
The translation of so many dreams helped me transform the complicated method of dream interpretation discovered by Carl Jung into a simple method of instant dream translation.
Everyone was skeptical about paying attention to their dreams and writing them down. Most people told me that they didn’t remember their dreams. However, once they became serious, they started remembering all their dreams, with all their details.
When they saw how much they learned when the dream messages were translated, they embraced dream analysis with a real passion.
I had then to discover a way to immediately translate not only a single dream, but a series of dreams, because many people started presenting me with numerous dreams on a daily basis. I had no time to translate all them with my method for a single dream interpretation. Therefore I had to perfect another way of doing it.
I found out that once you recognize the most known dream symbols in a dream collection you are able to immediately translate the general meaning of an entire dream series and I can teach you how to do the same.
When people learn how to translate their own dreams they love dream therapy. It is free. Nobody has to go anywhere in order to follow this type of psychotherapy. Everyone only has to write down their own dreams and learn how to translate these dreams into meaning snippets of wisdom following through with good therapy.
The process begins with studying the dream language, but once learned, the translations become automatic.
When you master the dream language you enter in contact with the wise unconscious mind that patiently analyzes your entire life, your personality, and your behavior. It gives you very clear answers about what is happening to you. Your depression is gradually eliminated by this knowledge and by the transformation of your personality.
As you keep translating the meaning of your dreams and evolving thanks to the development of your intelligence, you acquire mind power.
You are able to predict the future and change it according to what you desire to achieve. You learn how to judge other people, being able to practically read their minds by analyzing their behavior. You also learn how to positively influence other people, and how to captivate them thanks to your extraordinary personality.

Depression
Depression is a very common disease. Depression is a horrible disease. It can destroy a persons life, both social and pofessionally and can be lethal, because of the suicide risk.
Studies from different cultures and countries shows that depression are is seen egually often, from country to country. Around four to five percent of the entire population is at a a time in their lives, depressed.
Women are affected twice as frequently as men. an explanation for this opservatin could be that women are better to ask for help than men, and therefor many depressed men, will not show up in the statistics. Many men, may go around, feeling depressed, but never get it treated, because they won’t ask for help.
Some depressed people feel sad or repressed, while others tend to not feel anything at all.
Some feel very tired and find it hard to pull themselves together, or do anything.
A depressed person is often plagued by feelings of guilt and self-blame about things where they do not feel they messure up or of things they have done wrong earlier in life’s.
Many people suffer from insomnia
Others feel a painful inner turmoil, restlessness and anxiety, which means that they can not find rest.
Because of these symptoms of depression, One may feel that death would be a liberation, or that he / she does not deserve to live.
When do you have a depression?
World Health Organization has defined the Depression, when one meets more of the following criterias. However, be aware that these criterias would require considerable medical experience to be used properly. Whether it is a depression, depends on the severity of symptoms. We can all feel some of the following symptoms in once in a while. But for them to ”count” you must have them every day or almost every day, all day, for at least 14 days.
At least two of these cirterias must be met :
feeling of depressed
Markedly decreased desire to do anything
Reduced enegy, severe fatigue
And two of the following criteria must be met:
Reduced confidence
severe feelings of guilt and self-blame
Thoughts of death or suicide
Thinking and concentration difficulties
Severe internal unrest or just the opposite, inhibition
sleep disorders
Significant changes in weight or appetite.
Does one Meet two of the first group of criterias and two from the second group, you have a mild depression.
To have a moderate depression, one must meet at least four of the criteria from group 2 still also two from group one
When having a severe depression, one meets all three criterias from the first group and five from group 2.
It is however important to stress that ione can not himself, make the diagnosis. Only doctors are educated to do so.
What is normal and abnormal reactions?
It is very important to identify depression, compared to normal mood fluctuations, which we all can experience, for example in times of grief and crisis.
We can all be sad, restless and bored at times. But if it lasts for more than 14 days and one shows signs of several of the above symptoms, it appears that this could be something more comprehensive, where one may need professional help.
What are the reasons for depression?
Modern research suggests that depression caused by an imbalance between different brain centers. This can be caused in many ways.
For example, stress and psychological pressures affect this balance. If the pressure and stress persists for a long time and that the person is very vulnerable to this, (which may be genetically determined), the condition can develop into a depression.
Other conditions that can disrupt the brains functions and develop depression, are certain forms of bodily diseases, certain medications, and the abuse of amphetamines or ecstasy.
If you once had depression, it can very easily happen again, and eventually, depression can occur almost by itself.
How is depression?
Treatment should ideally be adjusted according to the severity of the disease.
Depression constitutes a broad spectrum, from relatively mild forms to severe life-threatening diseases.
For the mild to moderate depression, certain types of talk therapy can be effective. In severe depression, the doctor often combines talk therapy with medical antidepressant treatment, to quickly get the symptoms under control. The most serious depression is sometimes treated with elektorchok.
There is a high risk that the depression returns. Therefore it is important to prevent the disease by not stopping the treatment too early. It is said that, treatment should continue for at least a half to a full year, after you are declared healthy.
Depression can, as mentioned before, be developed as a result of a wide range of physical illnesses. So your doctor will often ask about other things than just the symptoms, which I described before.
Sometimes the doctor will complete a physical examination with blood tests.
Depression may be confusingly similar to dementia development. It is very important to distinguish sharply between the two conditions because depression can be treated, but usually, dementia can not.
The older the patient is, the more important and difficult it is, to find out whether it’s dementia or depression.
If the depression is accompanied by anxiety-attacks, the disease is often misinterpreted because that the anxiety (which is a disease in itself) is put in focus, and this could lead to an incorrect treatment of the patient – which could be fatal because of the risk that the depressed becomes even more depressed and could end up hurting himself or others.

Dealing with Depression and Kids

Not being in control of your feelings and moods when you have young children to bring up can be quite daunting. When you have a family and you are the victim of depression, it can sometimes seem like there is no way out. Being in this situation myself, I can tell you that there might not be an immediate step to take back to pure happiness but what I do know is that there is hope.
I know that we do not always feel like following the rules or complying with everything we read because the chemical imbalance in our brain does not always allow us to do so, but recognising the mood changes they draw near us can ultimately change the way we react to certain situations. There was a time when I simply did not know how to control my anger and emotions in the slightest and now by recognising these emotions before they are completely upon me, I can now decide how to deal with them.
For example:- if my child is in the room and I do not see the mood swing subsiding anytime soon, then I will ask my child to leave the room so that she/he misses most of my ill tempered nature. This gives me time to get my head back on track.
Realising that my way of thinking is sometimes erratic has made me understand that depression is in fact an illness. I know we are told this, and it is a scientific fact but that doesn’t excuse the behaviour in our own minds when we are thinking straight. We still feel the guilt of the nasty things we say and do and we also have to live with this, which can if thought of a lot bring on more feelings of depression.
To us life is a vicious circle of too many ups and downs and the outcome of this unfortunately, is not thinking straight. This makes us feel unworthy, not in control and as if life is pointless. It’s a bit like having a split personality, you are this confident person who strives for life and you know deep down that you are somebody, then all of a sudden the other you overshadows you making you question your every move.
These feelings can be controlled. I decided that depression has made It’s way through too many parts of my life but one things for sure, I will not let it run through my relationship with my daughter.
Of course there is work to be done, It’s not like I have a magic wand, which I wave around every time I feel myself spiralling out of control. Things are still far from perfect, but this is the first step. Believe me.
Tell your partner how you are feeling and let him know your plans. Invite him to help you out.
The first thing I did when I decided that it was time to change was talk openly with my partner. I asked him to try to understand how I was feeling and told him that my depression was something I simply couldn’t control. Luckily my partner does understand. I asked him to be and act in certain ways when I overreact or cry etc… This way if I get out of hand, the situation is not made worse by me feeling misunderstood. This is a lot to ask of someone, as some situations can get ridiculous. I explained to my partner that once I have calmed down, I would be able to see the situation for what it really is.
If you are finding it difficult getting your partner to understand your depression, then perhaps you could buy a book on the subject and have him read it so that he has a better understanding of what you are going through. Hopefully this way you would feel like he is supporting you.
Asking your partner to help you out in certain ways is allowing him to see that you do realise that you do have a problem, and that you do not intend to be cranky. It’s merely something you just can’t help. This may also enable him to be a bit more tolerant with you when you do lose it, making the overall situation less stressful and easier to cope with.
Trust yourself
When you are feeling really low, try to remember some of the times when you did feel on top of things, you trusted yourself at those times, then ask yourself what’s changed? Deep down under all the negative thoughts, the real answer will always be, not much has changed. Tell yourself that the way you are feeling at that present moment in time will pass and that you will be able to think clear enough again soon.
What is Self Esteem? Self – acceptance
Self – image
Self – confidence
Self – contentness
Self – Self approval
Self – worth
Why is it good to have Self – Esteem? When a person has good self – esteem, they are more content with there surroundings, this generates happiness, creativity and the ability to take risks. These people are generally more confident, flexible and adaptable and have the correct attitude to give and commit to others. These people value themselves and although they are aware of their faults, they accept themselves for who they are.
How do we get Good Self – Esteem?
When others value us, we feel a sense of belonging, like we are worth something. We also get self -esteem through people trusting us, spending time with us, respecting us, committing to us, being on our side and approving of us and our choices in life. How to deal with our children when depression is upon us
Children receive messages from us all the time. Unfortunately people who suffer from depression have to live with the fact that our kids will take most of our distressing traits with them on their own lives path when they mature. This is why good self -esteem is essential to your well being. If you feel good about yourself and in control of you life then the chances are, these are the qualities that should rub off on to your children; instead offering them a better start in life.
Understanding our children
Being a complete stress head myself, I fully understand the term:- ‘kids getting under our feet.’ Try this… Step 1 :- write down what you think your child’s personality is (good or bad) for example:- Adapts easily
Cares deeply about others
Cries a lot
Is very resilient
Likes quiet time
Quick to make choices
Can be assertive
Step 2 :-
See if you can find a connection between the characteristics, they may be two of the same coin! For example:- you may like the way they are quick to make choices take decisions and seem to know their own minds but not the way they constantly argue about doing things their own way, but isn’t this part of the same thing? You might give your child credit for standing up for themselves when playing with their friends but not like it when they are assertive with you. Again this is the same strength coming out in a different place.
Step 3 :-
Write down your child’s Likes, dislikes, favourite food, clothes,
programs etc… For example…
Favourite Food :-
Spaghetti bolognaise
Chicken nuggets
Fish fingers
Chicken Roasts
Ice-cream
Strawberry’s
Grapes
Food they don’t like :-
Green beans
Burgers
Salt n vinegar crisps
Sweet corn
Favourite programs :- Tracy Beaker
Raven
Stupid
Dick and Dom and so on…
This will create a whole new level of getting to know who your child is. If you find that there appears to be more things they don’t like next to the things they do like, it’s time to take improving their self – esteem very seriously. Kids will get a clearer picture of who they are if they feel like they are understood. Tell them from time to time what it is you like about them, help them to feel proud of themselves.
When we understand our children, life can feel 10 times easier to cope with. Making depression seem not half as bad an ordeal. Being a parent is, for most people, there greatest chalenge in life. Children can give us our best moments but they can also bring us head on with our worst moments too. Controlling the emotional storms which are often unleashed, from their side as well as our own takes patience, skill but above all a great deal of understanding.

Finding the right depression medication

Always feeling under the weather? Always not in the mood to be around others and have a good time? If you’re suffering from prolonged sadness for quite some time now, you should face these bouts of depression and get yourself diagnosed by a psychiatrist, they’re doctors who can actually help you out with your problem. Not to mention the various depression treatments, as well as all sorts of depression medication that doctors prescribe to their depression patients.
Fortunately depression can now be cured, especially when diagnosed early, depressed individuals can actually be treated through therapy and depression medication, although it may be a bit costly, a person’s good mental health is something that shouldn’t be scrimped on. Cognitive behavioral talk or interpersonal talk are incredibly healthy depression treatments that are just some of the available psychosocial depression treatments that cognitive behavior therapists can offer to their patients, both actually prove to be able to produce fruitful and positive results even for just short-term sessions, around ten to twenty weeks are almost always, already enough to get a depression patient slowly begin their recovery towards a sound mental health.
Before getting started with depression medication, the depression patient must first get him or herself to a reputable doctor, get a diagnosis of which type of depression the patient is actually suffering from, may it be clinical depression, manic depression or what-have-you. It’s best that you’re sure what you’re actually dealing with since there are various depression medications that are available in the market, you should make sure that you get the most appropriate one, the one that’ll actually cure your depression illness.
There’s actually a wide variety of anti-depressant depression medications available to help treat those who are suffering from depressive disorders. The more popular ones are those that are of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs variant then there are the tricyclics while the other popular variant is the monoamine oxidase inhibitors or MAOIs. These depression medications (the SSRIs variant as well as the other newer depression medication available in the market) actually to be a much safer alternative than the tricyclics, since they have fewer side-effects as opposed to the tricyclics depression medication variant.
Sometimes, doctors actually find it more effective to mix up these depression medications, depending on the needs of the individual, the doctor might actually prescribed a variety of depression medication to help cure one’s depression illness. Also the dosages of depression medication can actually be increased or lowered depending on what the doctor finds to be the most effective. However, when it comes to taking these depression medications, patients are highly advised to never mix up depression medications as well as pick out which dosages to take without consulting their doctors first.
Anti-anxiety or sedatives however, should never be mistaken as depression medication. Even though these anti-anxiety drugs are often prescribed along with depression medication, they don’t actually help cure one’s depression illness. Their mere purpose is to help calm one’s nerves which is why depression medications are still needed to be taken by the depression patient.
There are actually some common side-effects from depression medication, usually coming from the tricyclic variety. Some people tend to not mind these side-effects from depression medication, however if it does become to much of a bother and may end up ruining one’s ability to function properly, it’s best to go immediately to your doctor and report the side-effects. Quite common side-effects from depression medication are the following:
Dry mouth: always having the irritating feeling of being hydrated, it’s best to always have some (clean, drinking) water nearby so as to have something to drink whenever dry mouth occurs, chewing sugar free gum as well as brushing your teeth after every meal is also a good idea.
Constipation: cure such discomfort by eating and taking in a lot of fiber to help aid your digestion.
Blurry vision: another temporary side-effect, this one’s quite easy to pass but if it proves to be too much of a bother, consult your doctor immediately.
Headaches: quite common with the newer kinds of depression medication, it’s really not a big deal and will actually go away easily.
Insomnia: first-time users may actually experience this depression medication side-effect but it usually just happens during the first few weeks of taking the depression medication, asking your doctor to lower the dosage of the depression medication may actually help you with this side-effect, as well as the time of day wherein you take your depression medication can actually have something to do with your sleeping problem.

Natural Holistic Remedies For Anxiety, Stress And Depression Alternatives to Prozac, Valium & Ritalin

NATURAL ALTERNATIVES to PROZAC, VALIUM & RITALIN
There are so many natural and holistic remedies for all types of maladies these days that it is difficult to weed through all the bad or mis-information strewn across the web.
This series of articles, “Natural Holistic Remedies” will address only the ‘known to work’ remedies and natural therapies, either through personal experience or gathered from trusted sources. I’ve been studying these types of holistic cures and aids for over over 15 years and have discovered many new concepts as well as debunking some older (and some newer ones too). See the first article in the series Natural Holistic Remedies for Shingles here.
More and more these days, plants are finding a medicinal purpose in our lives, people like natural cures rather than subjecting themselves to harsh man-made chemicals and pills, also keep in mind that around 30% of the ingredients that are added in conventional medicine are extracted from natural resources like plants and herbs. Holistic remedies are becoming more commonplace in the medical field and even many scientists after years of testing are concluding that alternative medicine is making headway as a tool in the “every-man’s preventative medicine chest”.
Anxiety, stress and depression are almost at record levels in our country, who knows if it’s because of the economy, the stressful atmospheres and workplaces we subject ourselves to, or even home-life? Most people don’t think about it, but our diets, especially an excess of sugar, sugar substitutes, coffee, alcohol and/or junk foods can add to imbalances in our mental and physical states of being. No matter the cause, there is hope…and without resorting to dangerous synthetic drugs. Anxiety, stress and depression can have real life consequences and devastating effects on our spirits, minds and bodies that affect not only the entire scope of our lives, but those around us as well.
Natural Holistic Remedies for Anxiety, Stress & Depression:
Natural Holistic Remedy for Anxiety, Stress & Depression – Essential Oils:
Aromatherapy is becoming an ever-increasing part of more and more people’s lives, and it’s no wonder, the miracles of essential oils are truly part of “God’s gifts for us” here on Earth. Those little drops of miracles pack more punch in one drop than any other form of natural medicine. If you’ve never used essential oils before, read a primer I wrote on essential oils, what they are and the difference between therapeutic grade and most “on the market” essential oils called Many Helpful Suggestions on Uses of Essential Oils before delving into this article, it will save you lots of questions. To see how essential oils can help with depression and anxiety see: Can Essential Oils Help with Depression & Anxiety? Using Aromatherapy as a Mood Regulator.
Natural Holistic Remedy for Anxiety, Stress & Depression -Omega-3 fatty acids-
Many doctors – whether Holistic, Alternative, Eastern or Western types- recommend adding Omega-3 fatty acids to our diets…whether through supplements or part of a healthy diet consisting of fatty fish 2-to-3 times per week. Omega-3 Fatty acids are helpful for aiding depression, and many times are used as treatment for ADD-ADHD Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Arthritis, and many other maladies as well.
Natural Holistic Remedy for Anxiety, Stress & Depression -Exercise!
There’s nothing like the euphoric feeling of natural endorphins coursing through your system after physical exertion and exercise, they don’t call it “runner’s high” for nothing. And you don’t even have to run to get that “runner’s high” either…any form of physical exertion that gets your heart pumping will work wonders for your over-all morale, and a regular exercise program can even permanently change your state of mind, body and spirit. See my article “Feel Great, Lose Weight and Boost Metabolism” for more info.
Natural Holistic Remedy for Anxiety, Stress & Depression – Herbal Supplements-
There are an abundance of resources on herbal remedies and supplements for anxiety and depression, and most I’ve seen are pretty good. Some herbs I know of off-hand that work well for stress, depression and anxiety include; St. John’s Wort, Ginseng, and Lemon balm to name a few. An A/C contributor, Patti Stafford wrote a great article on Herbs for Depression I definitely recommend.
Natural Holistic Remedy for Anxiety, Stress & Depression – Diet & Nutrition-
As stated above, most of us don’t think about our diet’s much, just when we’re hungry, and what we eat can have a large impact on not only our physical bodies and minds, but our mental states and spiritual states as well. Sugar, sugar substitutes, coffee, alcohol and/or junk foods are the first things we should cut out or at least try to cut back on to bring our “spirit’s up”. These tend to give us a false sense of well-being for very short time periods and we end up crashing…you know the drill… “gotta’ have that coffee in the morning to get me going”…isn’t going to really work after a couple hours. Wouldn’t you rather have sustained energy and a good feeling about what you’re putting into your bodies? Try eating lots of nuts, beans and vegetables high in magnesium, especially leafy green vegetables and avoid spicy foods. A wonderful website I found on treating anxiety and depression with nutrition and diet is at; Diet Treatment for Anxiety and Depressionhttp://www.ctds.info/anxiety_depression.html, also a great book is; Nutrition Against Disease by Dr. Roger J. Williams.
Our bodies house our spirit’s and we should all treat our bodies with more respect, we would feel better inside and out. This is dealing with our problems ‘holistically” -including the “whole body” – mind, body and spirit- together, by using natural remedies and holistic aids, we are honoring our “whole-selves”. And never give up hope, you are definitely NOT alone, many, many people deal with this everyday, and a wide variety of websites, info. and help is out there.

Job Loss Depression: How Can a Christian Recover?
August 21, 2011 by admin
According to Howard Dayton of Crown Financial Ministries, job loss ranks high on the stress factor scale. “Losing a job is emotionally upsetting,” he says. “Anger may surface, because this major life-change often leaves a person feeling totally out of control.”
During the stressful period following a job loss, depression often sets in. And studies show it can have long-lasting effects on a person, sometimes as long as two years.
Job loss depression is not caused by one event alone, the single event of losing your job. Life Challenges, an online ministry for Christ-followers, says loss of employment can actually trigger a series of events they call a “cascade of negative life events.”
Loss of employment almost always triggers financial stress. For example, a lack of income may hinder your ability to make a car payment. So your car is repossessed. A negative life event. Without transportation, finding new employment becomes harder. Another negative life event. The longer you remain unemployed, the more financial difficulties you will likely experience. And the negative life events pile up, one on top of another.
In addition, losing your job may mean losing your health care benefits. This could make caring for health problems extremely difficult, putting additional stress on your finances and relationships.
Can you see how depression can escalate during a period of unemployment?
Financial and relational strains are not the only matters. Unemployed people often suffer from feelings of insecurity, inferiority, and low self-esteem. “Job loss is critical for men,” says Dayton, “because they often base self-esteem on the ability to be successfully productive.”
Even after you become employed again, depression can linger. In addition to depression’s emotional impact, studies show it can influence your physical health, too.
Someone with job loss depression may also struggle with uncertainty about their current and future job stability. “The days when job security depended on not much more than regularity and a certain degree of competence is a thing of the past,” says Dayton. “Buyouts, mergers, and loss of market share have left many individuals and families across our nation suffering from job loss.”
Since anyone can lose their employment at any given time, anyone can experience job loss depression. And it isn’t just the initial job loss that causes depression, but the “cascade of negative life events.” But you can prepare for these situations by planning ahead.
Your preparation should include financial planning for the future, mental health techniques to encourage you, and spiritual guidance that helps you find your value and self-worth outside your job.
It is extremely important after a job loss, and during your search for a new job, to check your spiritual pulse. Continue to attend worship services. Maintain your devotions, Bible study, and prayer time. Remember how much God loves you, and see your value and worth through his eyes.
Life Challenges stresses the importance of seeing yourself as God sees you, as a lasting way to find and keep a positive self-image. Your employment situation can change at any time. But your value is not subject to change, because it is not based on the fluctuations of the job market.
Your value is based on God’s unchanging, constant, and faithful love. Continue to trust God. Ask him to open doors to employment opportunities, and wait patiently for him to move in your situation. He will provide you with your next job, and he will take care of you while you wait.
In the Bible’s Contemporary English Version, Psalm 94:18-19 says, “When I felt my feet slipping, you came with your love and kept me steady. And when I was burdened with worries, you comforted me and made me feel secure.”
Christians need to remember this truth. God loves you, and he will support you. He will take away your anxiety and depression and bring joy to your soul.
